Love Pinoy Music? Get involved as a researcher or writer helping to build the FlipStarz Catalog.

What is a digger?

If you have clicked your way here, I should congratulate you. You have found the most important page on the site. Just being here indicates that you want to be a part of bringing Pinoy music to the masses.

The word "digger" actually comes from the DJ term, meaning "someone who digs through old records to find the perfect track". A FlipStarz digger is someone who goes through YouTube and finds the very best Filipino music videos and then adds their "embed code" to the library.

This page will introduce you to the process.

Adding Videos
In a way, Flipstarz is more like Wikipedia than Facebook. It is a crowd-sourced but curated library and research area that also happens to be highly entertaining.

Names, tags, and descriptions are all subject to editing. The editors often incorporate info from the comments into the item descriptions if its good. Getting well written information attached to the video takes precedence over individual "ownership" of the entry.

If you want to add video to the catalog yourself, be sure to carefully read the quality standards, naming conventions and embedding instructions below. It's  possible you were sent to this page because you uploaded something before getting familiar with our process.

If this sounds like too much commitment, and you just want to suggest a video, you can add the embed code or a youtube link in the comments at the bottom of this page. We do read them and chances are we will add it to the catalog.

On the other hand, if you came to get your hands dirty, read on...

Embed Quality Standards

Our goal for the video catalog is to have ONLY high quality videos. This means the VERY best performances and official music videos make the cut. That's what makes FlipStarz different than searching directly on YouTube. We cut out the junk! Its a lot of work... I usually look at 8-10 videos on Youtube for each one I add, even when I know what I'm looking for.

  • The most important thing is to find the best version of the video (there are usually many versions of the same song or performance, but they vary in quality).
  • Don't add videos that aren't a good performance, good sound quality, or good video quality. There are plenty of excellent videos on YouTube, so keep digging till you find one.
  • Don't add fan videos or low quality slideshows. Find the original music video, a stunning performance, or an awesome cover.
  • Get official versions when you can (from the artist, label, or director's page), unless there is a better quality version on another channel.
  • For bootlegs (videos recorded by a fan at the show) please don't add it unless its an exceptional moment: a rare performance, from a good camera position, and the sound quality is decent (it shouldn't hurt your ears to hear it). Let's represent, not disappoint.
  • Don't add videos that are recorded with a camera pointing at a TV screen. This is REALLY lame. The only exception would be something that's truly rare (some 80s videos or only available like this).
  • You might want to find a few of the artists best songs to add at one time. It's easy once you are on a roll. If you are really into it, make a playlist in Youtube, and contact me, and we will set up a page with the playlist in it. (example needed)

Videos that don't measure up to these quality standards may be deleted, but if you aren't sure, go ahead and post it here. It's better to give it a try.

Naming Conventions
There is actually a formula for how we title videos on FlipStarz.

Artist Name - "Song Title" (original artist) video type
Here are some examples:

  • Nina Girado - "Piano in the Dark" live cover
  • Sugarfree - "Kung Ayaw Mo Na Sa Akin" music video
  • Yeng Constantino - "Ang Awitin" live
  • Nina Girado - "Irreplaceable" (Beyonce) live bootleg
  • Sarah Geronimo - "How Could You Say You Loved Me" music video
  • Willie Revillame - "Kung Para Sayo" singing on Wowowee
Notice that official music videos are always labeled "music video" but performances on TV shows are called "live" or "live cover" or have the name of the show.

Embedding Instructions
Embedding means you paste the code from another site like YouTube. You can go HERE to embed a video. Embedding tutorial (coming soon).

Tags (better info coming soon)
So for a Music related video its like this: music as opposed to fil or tv or comedy...
then whatever applies live, video as in "music video", bootleg means recorded at a show on a cheap camera, cover means this is not the original recording artist...
then the categories: OPM for all tagalog songs. Rock for any rock genre, POP for happy upbeat songs or love songs, Alternative for more artistic or wierd stuff. Dance, Diva for any diva songs...(yes these overlap a lot, use any that apply)
then the style (genre): the ones im using are up on the front page, but we can add more any time. Hip-Hop, R&B, Punk, acoustic, ballad, electronic, bossa, jazz, emo,

I have been making exceptions for the quality standards for classic songs that have no music videos, but its still important to find the best version of the song. Simple elegant album cover art is preferred over random video videoke tracks or slideshows of someones girlfriend.

Bummed out about all these quality standards??????
remember... YOU CAN EMBED ANY VIDEO YOU WANT ON YOUR PROFILE PAGE!!!

Woohooooooooo!!
